Hospitality is one of the primordial values of the civilized world. The human community and awareness were born when the stranger or/and the enemy was first received as guest by another man. As a consequence of this, the Greek-Roman culture developed three dimensions of hospitality: a material, a human and a religious one. Thus, being hospitable means to attend to the basic material needs of the guests, to treat them as true human beings, even as a sort of divine messengers. At its highest level, hospitality was seen as a source of happiness and blessing, as it was commonly believed that the guest could assume an intercession role between his host and the invisible divinity. Therefore, the religions, cultures and philosophies of the world constitute the foundation of our civilization, as one of the earliest institutions was the law or value of hospitality.
The starting point of our conference is today’s social and religious context of the European world, a context marked by the complex challenges of the migration phenomenon. The various answers formulated by the Europeans to the asylum requests made by the political and economical refugees are worth being analyzed not only from the perspective of the founding values of the European Union – solidarity, subsidiarity, human rights, freedom, democracy etc. – but also in the light of the history of religions and civilizations where we can find open solutions to social tensions similar to those with which we are being confronted today.
The aim of this conference is to analyze the value and place of hospitality within the human and religious consciousness of mankind, mainly by re-visiting fundamental texts and traditions belonging to the Greek-Roman, Hebrew, Christian and Muslim civilizations. The participation of specialists in other humanistic and religious traditions is not excluded; on the contrary, their participation is welcomed as an opportunity of enrichment.
We seek answers to the numerous questions which hospitality poses nowadays. From among these we could mention: within the present day civilized world, facing complex phenomena such as migration, poverty, violence and terrorism, how can hospitality be seen – limited or unlimited? Which should be the spirit of hospitality? Which values form the basis of hospitality? How can hospitality be lived in urban areas? Which is the place of hospitality in a social context marked by aggressive marketing and technocracy? Do public services retain anything from the religious spirit of hospitality? Could religion and faith motivate and strengthen attitudes of solidarity among people? The answers cannot be found in only one humanist field. This conference implies several thematic directions: religious anthropology, the history of religions, the phenomenology of religions, the sociology of religions, the history of monastic orders, the philosophy of culture, spiritual theology, pastoral theology, political theology, and social theology.
Abstract
Please send 300 words and a brief C.V. to Professor Wilhelm Dancă [wilhelm.danca@gmail.com] and cua-rvp@cua.edu until February 15, 2016. Presentation of accepted papers will be 20 minutes in length followed by 20 minutes discussion. Full papers (for which in order to promote in-depth investigation there is no upper page limit) will be published by the RVP.
Logistics
There is no registration fee. The organizer will offer accommodation, while the transport and food expenses are met by the participants (or their institutions).

Ospitalitatea este una dintre valorile întemeietoare ale lumii civilizate. Comunitatea și conștiința umană s-au născut în momentul în care din străin sau/și dușman omul a devenit oaspete pentru un alt om. În prelungirea acestui moment, cultura greco-romană a dezvoltat trei dimensiuni ale ospeției: materială, umană și religioasă. Astfel a fi ospitalier însemna să te îngrijești de necesitățile materiale de bază ale oaspeților, să-i tratezi ca pe niște oameni adevărați și chiar ca pe un fel de mesageri divini. În stadiul cel mai ridicat, ospeția era considerată ca sursă de fericire și binecuvântare, fiindcă se credea că oaspetele mijlocea întâlnirea cu divinitatea invizibilă. Așadar religiile, culturile și filosofiile lumii stau la baza civilizației noastre, iar una dintre instituțiile de început ale civilizației a fost legea sau valoarea ospitalității.
Punctul de plecare al conferinței este actualul context social și religios al lumii europene, un context marcat de provocările mari ale fenomenului migrației. Răspunsurile diferite pe care le dau europenii la cererea de azil formulată de oaspeții refugiați politic și economic merită să fie analizate nu doar din perspectiva valorilor fondatoare ale Uniunii Europene – solidaritate, subsidiaritate, drepturile omului, libertate, democrație etc. –, ci și în lumina istoriei religiilor și civilizațiilor unde putem găsi soluții deschise la tensiuni sociale asemănătoare celor cu care ne confruntăm astăzi.
În cadrul conferinței vrem să trecem în revistă valoarea și locul ospitalității în conștiința umană și religioasă a omenirii, revizitând în principal texte și tradiții fundamentale ale civilizației greco-romane, ebraice, creștine și musulmane. Nu excludem participarea la conferință a specialiștilor aparținând altor tradiții umaniste și religioase decât cele indicate mai sus; dimpotrivă, considerăm participarea lor un prilej de îmbogățire.
Căutăm răspunsuri la multe întrebări pe care le ridică ospitalitatea astăzi. Iată câteva dintre ele: în lumea civilizată din zilele noastre, care se confruntă cu problemele fenomenelor migrației, sărăciei, violenței și terorismului, cum este văzută ospitalitatea – limitată sau nelimitată? Care este spiritul ospitalității? Care valori stau la baza ospitalității? Cum se poate trăi ospitalitatea în mediile urbane? Care este locul ospitalității într-un context social marcat de marketing agresiv și tehnocrație? Serviciile publice păstrează ceva din spiritul religios al ospitalității? Ar putea religia și credința să motiveze mai mult solidaritatea dintre oameni? Răspunsurile nu pot veni doar dintr-un singur domeniu umanist. Conferința implică mai multe direcții tematice: antropologia religioasă, istoria religiilor, fenomenologia religiilor, sociologia religiilor, istoria ordinelor religioase, filosofia culturii, teologia spirituală, teologia pastorală, teologia politică, teologia socială.
Rezumat
Trimiteți titlul, rezumatul comunicării (300 de cuvinte) și CV-ul la Prof. Wilhelm Dancă (wilhelm.danca@gmail.com) până pe 15 februarie 2016. Comunicările pot fi prezentate în română și engleză, iar durata lor va fi de 20 de minute, urmate de alte 20 de minute pentru discuții. În vederea publicării de către RVP din Washington D.C., comunicările vor fi redactate în limba engleză. Pentru a permite aprofundarea subiectului prezentat, editorul nu impune un număr limitat de pagini.

Nu se percepe taxă de înscriere. Organizatorii asigură cazare, cheltuielile de transport și masă urmând a fi suportate de participanți.
